Harmel's Taylor River Fishing Report
9/26/2024

380 CFS (at Almont)

The flows through Almont will be between 350 and 400 for another week before the flows drop for the remainder of the season. This is a great time for fishing the Taylor! Morning temperatures are cold, so no need to get out too early. Fishing has been picking up as the day warms up. The summer tourist season is over, so Harmels’ water, as well as public water, shouldn’t see many people.

We are seeing some midge and BWO hatches in the mornings and afternoons, and some small and sporadic PMD and caddis hatches as well. Nymphs and streamers have given us the most success lately. Black #12 Pat’s rubberlegs is a great attractor fly and has caught us some big (tournament winning) fish! Small (#16-20) mayfly and baetis nymphs have also been working well. Fishing with emerger patterns and light or no weight has also been working during the afternoon hatches. Size down your leader/tippet and flies if you’re getting into some slower water. 5x or even 6x should help your presentation as the fish are more wary after a long season.

TOP FLIES:
#12 black or black/brown pat’s rubberlegs
#16-20 flashback pheasant tail
#18-20 purple, red, black two bit hooker
#18-20 black or olive RS2
#18-20 micro mayfly
#18-20 flashback emerger
#18-22 BWO
#16-20 parachute adams
Sculpzillas, double gongas, baby gongas in black, tan, olive

Meet John Evon

John is starting his third season as a fly fishing guide at Harmels on the Taylor. He has been an avid fly fisherman for nearly 10 years and loves being able to share his experience and take people out on the river. There is nothing more exciting for him than getting people hooked on fly fishing.

Living on the property, John spends a lot of his free time learning the intricacies of the river and exploring other nearby rivers and lakes. He is looking forward to another great season of fishing and getting his dog, Hank, out on the river.
