This section of the river is designated Gold Medal Waters, an honor given to Colorado’s finest trout fishing spots. These pristine waters offer some of the best fly fishing in the state, with healthy populations of wild trout.

Join us in kicking off the 2026 fishing season with a friendly fishing competition at Harmels - Fishing, live music, prizes, food & drinks! Welcome to Harmels' Spring Fly Fishing Tournament at Harmels on the Taylor! Join us on May 30, 2026 at 9:00 AM for a day of friendly competition and outdoor fun. The tournament will go from 9 am until 3 pm. Then, join us for an after party with prizes, live music, games, food, and drinks until 8 pm. You will get 50% off of your cabin stay with your ticket purchase! Please read through all of our event info and tournament rules. RULES -15 2-person teams - to allow for enough space, only one angler from each team will fish at a time. Teams can split fishing time however they would like. -Please don't spend more than one hour in any fishing location. We want everyone to be able to fish our entire stretch of the Taylor. -Participants must fish on our property. We will have maps, property markers, and staff to make sure everyone stays in bounds. -Fly fishing only -No foul hooking or snagging. -Fish must be landed in a net to count. -Barbless hooks or pinched barbs only. SCORING -Scoring will be based on the total number of fish caught as well as your team’s longest fish. We will add the inches of your longest fish to the total number of fish caught, and that will be your score. (Example: If your team catches 20 fish, and your largest fish is 18 inches, your team score will be 20 + 18 = 38) -Please measure and take pictures of any fish that might be used as your largest fish. -There will be prizes for the top 3 teams. PRIZES 1st Place: Two person float trip on the Gunnison River 2nd Place: Premium fly fishing packs and loaded fly boxes from Umpqua 3rd Place: 2 - $100 gift cards to our fly shop/souvenir store *PLEASE NOTE: The Taylor River is very rocky and can be difficult for some people to wade. We want everyone to have a good time, so please make sure you are comfortable wading in a rocky river with a swift current before booking. Good wading boots with felt bottoms and/or studs and wading staffs will make for much easier and safer wading.

Check-in is at 4pm and check-out is at 10am. If you are going to be later than 5pm on the day of your check-in, please give us a call at (970) 641-1740 and we will have your room ready for your arrival.

Yes, we do allow pets on the property. There is a $25.00 fee per pet, per night applied to your room if you are in a designated pet friendly room. If it is determined that you have not reported your pet to the front desk and are not in a pet friendly room, a $250 deep cleaning fee will be charged to your room.

Unfortunately, there is no wi-fi in any of the cabins. You are welcome to use the free wi-fi in the main lodge.

No lures are allowed on our section of the Taylor River. Please take a look at our Fly Fishing page for more information about what is and is not allowed when fishing the river.

There are small charcoal grills located in between most cabins available for guest use.

Yes, Harmels on the Taylor provides all bedding and towels for guests.

We are located 30 minutes from Crested Butte and about 20 minutes from Gunnison, which are where the nearest grocery stores are located.

The nearest airport is the Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport located in Gunnison, about 20 minutes from Harmels.

There are no fire rings/pits near any cabins. Guests are available to use the campfire pit located at the Cookout Grounds.

Those who wish to fish our private one-mile stretch of the Taylor River and are not a guest of Harmels can pay $150/day to fly fish.

Harmels on the Taylor offers discounts on cabin stays for wedding guests of those hosting a wedding on the property and those who are currently or have served in the military.
