Flight Information

Driving Directions

Harmel's Ranch Resort is located on the western side of the Continental Divide at 8,412 ft. We are just north of Gunnison, Colorado and a little south of the ski area of Crested Butte. If you would like to plug our address into a map finder or your GPS - it should read:

6748 County Road 742, Almont, CO 81210

If you come over Monarch Pass you will go through Gunnison to get to the ranch.  Usually we would send you to Almont and have you drive up Taylor Canyon Road (County Road 742) to get to us.  However, this summer 2013 they are closing Taylor Canyon Road and sending folks to a very convenient and beautiful detour.  Head to Almont from Gunnison going North on highway 135.  You'll see a flashing road sign saying Jack's Cabin Cutoff is the detour for Taylor Canyon Road right before you get to Almont proper.  Do not turn on Taylor Canyon Road.  Keep going another 5 miles north on 135 heading towards Crested Butte.  You'll see mile marker signs on the right side of the road.  Almost a half mile after you see the 15 mile marker is your turn for Jack's Cabin Cutoff.  You will see some orange diamond shaped signs saying Harmel's and Scenic River Tours OPEN, detour for Taylor River Road, etc.  Turn on to this road (making a right hand turn).   There will be a yellow house with a funny yard (a bit like Sanford & Sons with scarecrows) on the right side of the turn and a blue house on the left side as you make the turn.   Jack's Cabin Cutoff is approximately 4 and a half miles long.  It will dump you out on to the upper part of Taylor Canyon Road (County Road 742) and you'll drive forward for another mile to get to the ranch.  You will see the big sign saying Welcome to Harmel's on your right.

If you come over Cottonwood Pass you will miss the detour altogether.  See directions below for Cottonwood Pass.

Here are some simple directions from different starting points. Give us a call if you have any questions!

Denver International Airport (going over Monarch Pass)

Monarch Pass takes a little longer than Cottonwood Pass but Monarch Pass is paved the entire way with passing lanes going uphill, better road signs, and more guard rails. If you need to stop by Wal-Mart, super market, beer store or sporting goods store to pick up your Colorado State Fishing License in Gunnison before coming to the ranch, this would be the best route to take. The drive takes approximately 3 1/2 to 4 hours from Denver.

Airport Exit on Peña Blvd.
I-70 West
470 South
285 South
24 South
50 West (Gunnison, follow directions above)

Denver (going over Cottonwood Pass)

This Pass cuts off about 30 to 45 minutes of your time, making it approximately 3 to 3 1/2 hours. Take care, especially if you are not used to mountain driving. Cottonwood Pass is paved on the Buena Vista side, but the Gunnison side is dirt (sometimes washboard). It's an exceptionally beautiful drive with a great possibility of viewing wildlife. Take your time and remember the uphill driver has the right of way for mountain driving etiquette.

Airport Exit on Peña Blvd
I-70 West
470 South
285 South
24 North at Johnson Village to Buena Vista
Turn left (west) at the town's only stop light with the sign reading "Cottonwood Pass"
At the end of Cottonwood Pass take a left on the paved road (County Road 742)
Follow CR 742 for approximately 20 miles to Harmel's Ranch Resort.

Colorado Springs

This drive is approximately 3 to 3 1/2 hours to Harmel's Ranch Resort.
115 South
50 West (Gunnison; follow directions above)

Denver through Leadville

This way takes approximately 4 hours to Harmel's Ranch Resort.
I-70 West
91 South to Leadville
24 South to Buena Vista
From here you can choose to go over Cottonwood Pass or keep going South on 24 to 50 West to go over Monarch Pass.
